I’m gonna just pipe in as an Argentine (like this awesome kid is). Gender neutral language has been a huge topic lately, namely because, during the debate about the legalisation of abortion, there was an interview conducted with a secondary-school girl who used the gender neutral ‘todes’. Conservatives were at her goddamn throat about it.

I should explain that, in Spanish, the Real Term™ for ‘everyone’ is ‘todos’, which is also the term for ‘every man’. Because Spanish nouns are all gendered, unlike English, which only gives genders to people, and sometimes animals. Up until now there wasn’t a translation for they/them pronouns, but elle/le (which is the source of ‘todes’) is the term being used now for nb people or people whose pronouns you don’t know. This is actually a really big change, but many people, especially more conservative adults, aren’t into it very much, so they scold and mock people who use it.
